Joseph R. Heffern is an attorney specializing in intellectual property, licensing law, and civil litigation. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Joe focuses on patent, trademark, trade secret, unfair competition, and regulatory matters in the pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device industries. He also has experience in patent & trademark prosecution, patent opinions, and proceedings before the USPTO.
Joe has represented and counseled multinational pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers, as well as small startup companies. In particular, he has handled a significant number of intellectual property litigations in federal courts around the country.
In addition to his courtroom proficiency, Joe has considerable experience counseling clients in the areas of patents, trademarks, copyrights, pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement matters, non-competition agreements, and right of publicity issues. He has negotiated, drafted, and litigated a substantial number of licensing agreements.
Prior to joining Rogers Castor, Joe practiced law for over a decade at the international law firm of Dechert LLP with their highly respected intellectual property and litigation practice groups.
Joe is a former law clerk to the Honorable Thomas N. O’Neill, Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Joe graduated magna cum laude from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, where he served as an editor on the Temple Law Review. Joe received his Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University, where he majored in Biology and English.
Prior to attending law school, Joe conducted basic science research in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, involving the separation and identification of small organic molecules, and subsequently worked as a pharmaceutical chemist for a division within Thermo Electron Corporation.
